PRP Microneedling Hair Treatment

PRP hair treatment is proving exceptionally popular among Australians. It’s an effective treatment that delivers genuine improvements in hair growth and coverage, without using surgery, chemicals or needing downtime.

PRP has been around for a few years now and is demonstrating great effectiveness at treating many common hair and skin conditions.

Hair and Skin Science treats over 100,000 Australians every year and PRP is one of our most popular treatments.

So what is PRP hair treatment? What is microneedling and how do the two work together?

Let’s find out!

What is PRP?

PRP, Platelet Rich Plasma, is a well-established treatment derived from your own blood. It is used extensively to treat sports injuries and to promote healing.

It wasn’t long until its true potential was realized and it began being used in cosmetic treatments too.

Blood is full of goodness like stem cells, white blood cells, growth factors and elements your body uses as part of the natural healing process.

When you get injured, the first thing your body does is send more blood to the site. It helps clean the wound and gives cells everything they need to regenerate and heal.

PRP treatments use the same principle.

Blood plasma containing the white blood cells and growth factors is separated from red blood cells and concentrated into a PRP solution.

That solution is injected into the scalp to help encourage cells to regenerate and hair follicles to grow new hair.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a form of injection that uses either a pen-like microneedler or a roller with tiny needles.

It is used to perforate the skin and cause your body to send blood to the site to help repair. Nutrients within the blood help skin cells regenerate and create new collagen cells.

The end result is an ‘encouraged’ regeneration of the skin that results in new skin cells and more collagen within the skin.

When used in hair treatment, the skin around hair follicles is damaged by the microneedler, blood is sent to the area, skin cells regenerate and hair follicles are encouraged to generate new hair.

PRP micro needling hair treatment

As you can see from those two descriptions, PRP and microneedling are meant for each other.

Both use your own blood, both use your body’s natural healing processes and both help encourage skin cells to regenerate and encourage hair follicles to grow new hair.

PRP is a natural product derived from your own blood and the microneedler is designed to elicit a healing response from your body.

Delivering a PRP payload does both things at once, giving skin cells and hair follicles everything they need to regenerate and regrow.

When traditional hair treatments so often fall short or require surgery, PRP micro needling hair treatment is a genuine breath of fresh air!

What does a PRP hair treatment appointment involve?

Hair and Skin Science are experts at keeping you comfortable and administering advanced cosmetic treatments.

You’ll be made as comfortable as possible in one of our discreet clinics across Australia.

We’ll then draw a little blood so we can create the PRP solution. It feels like a blood test, where we draw 10-20ml of blood.

The blood is passed through a medical centrifuge to separate the blood plasma we want from the blood we don’t.

We add the PRP solution to the microneedler and apply it to the affected area. Once done, we’ll clean up the site and shine a red LED onto the skin.

The red LED light helps minimize swelling and reduces the chance of infection, which is something we like to do for every patient.

Once the light has done its work, you’re free to go about your day.

How long does PRP hair treatment take?

A PRP hair treatment appointment lasts less than an hour. A course of treatments will typically include 3-4 appointments spread over a couple of months.

Your first appointment will be a consultation where we’ll discuss the treatment, your current situation, your health and expectations.

We can provide personalized guidance for your treatment at the time, but it’s typically 3-4 treatments at less than an hour each.

What conditions can PRP hair treatment treat?

PRP hair treatment can help treat the many causes of hair loss. It is proving very effective at addressing most causes and is delivering exceptional results for most recipients.

Conditions it can address include male and female pattern baldness, stress-related baldness, hair thinning, androgenetic alopecia, receding hairline, patchy hair, patchy beard and many other conditions.

How long will it take to see results?

How long it takes to see results from PRP hair treatment depends on the condition we are treating, the severity, your age, overall health, any mitigating factors and your genetics.

This is medicine so there are no concrete answers. We’re all different. We heal at different rates and there are so many variables it’s impossible to tell.

However, the vast majority of recipients of PRP treatments at Hair and Skin Science begin seeing definite results in 6-8 weeks.

As you can appreciate, it’s impossible to get into specifics in a blog post. We can go into the treatment, its effectiveness and what to expect at a consultation.

Is downtime or aftercare required?

There is no downtime required for PRP micro needling hair treatment. It’s a non-intrusive procedure that does minimal damage, so requires no downtime.

The microneedler is tightly controlled so we manage what it does at all times so there should be little visible signs of having work done.

Aftercare is minimal too.

You may experience tingling or redness at the treatment site afterwards, but that should be all. Not everyone experiences this, but if you do, it’s nothing to worry about.

Any discomfort can be addressed by over-the-counter pain medication.

Looking after the area simply requires the use of a natural moisturizer that we can provide.

We recommend keeping the treatment site out of direct sunlight for 24-48 hours, minimizing strenuous exercise, not using any chemical shampoos and generally being mindful of your scalp for a couple of days.

Other than that, micro needling hair treatment is as easy as a treatment can be!
